Fountain of Notre Dame de Marceille (Aude)
This fascinating site is the church of Notre Dame de Marceille, near Limoux. Alongside the church is a ramp built of stone, called the Voie Sacrée along which one finds the fountain.
For at least 1000 years its rare waters have been reputed for curing maladies of the eyes. Inside the church is a mysterious statue, a "black madonna also said to be "miraculous"...the numerous
ex-voto suspended around the statue and on all the walls of the church testify to this fact. |

Inscription reads: "MILLE MALI SPECIES VIRGO LEVAVIT AQUA" (By this water the
virgin cures 1000 kinds of maladies.)
The slow, steady trickle of water remains uniform in times of heavy rains or
drought.
