Carl Uytterhaegen: 'ETERNAL MEMORY'
To my father and my mother.
Death and religion (next to freedom, love and social engagement) are the two main concepts which form an essential part of who I am and which are crystalized in this photo essay called "Cemeteries in the World". I have been working on this essay since the beginning of the seventies. On the one hand, cemeteries are for me symbols of transience and, on the other hand, they are an expression of the cultural and religious identity of mankind. This series of photographs shows my interpretation of the concept of the cemetery and also the historical and documentary value of the photographs, the latter being of the utmost importance to me.
