| 1984 or 85. I was the drummer in a violent little band called Mau Mau 55. Here I'm outside our rehearsal place in what they now call "lower downtown" Denver. The other band members were Randy Walters on guitar,
Mike Savage on vocals and Wolfgang on Arp Odyssey bass. (After Wolfgang it was Patrick Bowers on bass guitar.) Mike and Randy later moved to LA and continued under the name Pigmy Love Circus, playing
a lot of the same songs we'd done as Mau Mau 55. For this photo I'm wearing a Mellotron cover and holding a dog's skull. Where did I get the skull? I'm glad you asked that question! Whilst driving in
my dilapidated jalopy along some unknown, deserted dirt road somewhere in some lonely corner of Colorado on a hot, still summer day, I glimpsed a curious collection of objects on the shimmering
gravel at the side of the road and stopped to have a closer look. All in a little clump were the following items: a large glass jar (empty), a long, pointy stick, and a dog's head. I'm no forensic
scientist but I'd guess it had been removed from the rest of the dog - wherever that was - a week or so before. Naturally I did what ANYONE would have done...looked around for something to wrap the
head in so I could take it home and strip it down to the skull! Photo by Mike Savage. |
